ReWater Center Visits City of Santa Monica Sustainable Water Infrastructure Project
On March 17, 2023, Dr. Amy Childress and her group from the ReWater Center visited the City of Santa Monica Sustainable Water Infrastructure Project. This innovative water reuse initiative is designed to enhance local water self-sufficiency by treating municipal wastewater to a high standard suitable for non-potable reuse and groundwater replenishment. The project plays a critical role in reducing reliance on imported water supplies and improving long-term water resilience for the community.
The facility integrates advanced treatment processes to ensure the produced water meets stringent quality standards. First, municipal wastewater undergoes preliminary and biological treatment to remove organic matter and suspended solids. The water is then further purified through advanced membrane processes, including microfiltration and reverse osmosis, which effectively remove dissolved contaminants. Finally, the treated water is disinfected using ultraviolet light and advanced oxidation processes to ensure safety and reliability for reuse applications.
The project also incorporates a dual distribution system to deliver recycled water for non-potable uses, such as irrigation and toilet flushing, while supporting groundwater recharge efforts. By combining decentralized treatment with sustainable design, the City of Santa Monica Sustainable Water Infrastructure Project demonstrates a forward-looking approach to urban water management and serves as a model for other communities seeking to improve water sustainability.
